5 Tips to Help You With Sharing the Gospel
#1 – It’s not about you.
The Gospel is for you, not about you. We need the Gospel message. The Gospel message does not need us. What I mean by that is, there is nothing you or I can do or say to make it “better” or more “appealing”. To be honest, for a long, long time I thought it was all about how creative I could be when presenting the Gospel. Paul writes in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Here, the Apostle Paul makes it incredibly clear that the Gospel is God’s power for salvation. God’s power. God’s power is perfect and there is nothing you or I can do to make it better
#2 – Your story matters.
Okay. I know I just said that the Gospel is not about you, and my opinion hasn’t changed on that. However, I will say that your story of salvation matters when sharing the Gospel. If you have been saved by grace through faith by believing in the person and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, in other words, if you are a Christ-follower, than you have experienced God’s power and your salvation story matters when it comes to sharing the Gospel. Read John 9 from start to finish. Go and do that now. Don’t worry, this article can wait until you come back.
Take notice of what the previously blind man says in verse 25, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” You see, even though the man born blind was still a little bit confused, he was able to share about his experience with God’s power. His story mattered and God used him to stand strong in front of those who were challenging him.
#3 – So, when is it appropriate?
What about knowing when it is the “right time” to share the Gospel? The response to this one is an easy one. Check out 2 Timothy 4:2, “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” In season and out of season basically means that it is always the right time to preach the Gospel. Sometimes it will be easy and convenient, other times it will be uncomfortable and seemingly inconvenient. Paul instructs us to always be prepared to share about what Christ has accomplished on the cross.
#4 - Being prepared.
It is always good to be prepared. The truth of the matter is you never know when you will be presented with the opportunity to share the Gospel, which means you always must be prepared. In his First Epistle, Peter writes, “But in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,” (1 Peter 3:15). Like Paul who encouraged Timothy (and us) to be preaching the Word always, Peter instructs his readers to always be prepared to do this. This means having deep roots (Colossians 2:6-7), spending plenty of time in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) and a having a sound knowledge of the Scriptures (Titus 1:9). Also note that Peter tells us to do this with “gentleness and respect” which means to do it with a spirit of humility
#5 – Speaking of humility…
Christ- followers are called to be humble. Why? Because the One we are following is perfectly humble and repeatedly displayed what it means to show humility in every situation. In Philippians 2:3-4 Paul writes, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Christians should always be striving to put others first. This is especially important when sharing the Gospel because we are telling the story of the most humble. This is not about winning a debate or belittling other people, rather it is recognizing the need for the Gospel to be heard and responded to by all, and ensuring that this happens in a way that glorifies God and puts others first in every instance.
